HERITAGE WALL MURAL

The first ingredient to an exciting and successful mural is enthusiasm by the client for the project. Environmental Services Manager Mike Hoffman shared his enthusiasm during our first meeting concerning the potential rendering of the Heritage Wall in St. Vincent Clay Hospital’s new wing.

Mr. Hoffman’s input was vital to the approved design. A tour of the facility and a detailed description of the hospital’s goal for the mural gave me a clear vision to proceed.

The primary theme of the mural is Cherishing the Past. A larger than life depiction of Daughter of Charity Sr. Justina Morgan of Clay County leads into the mural from the upper left corner. Morgan then blends to the right into the other main elements. The blending is aesthetically pleasing but also represents unity and the necessity of all the elements to the hospital’s past, present, and future.

The bronze statue of St. Vincent from the 86th St., Indianapolis location occupies the far right of the design. St. Vincent and Sr. Morgan face inward to the entryway of the original hospital in Clay County. The individuals are larger than the building because of the value of human contribution.

At the bottom right, facing into the mural is a horse and buggy doctor depicting the early beginnings but also suggestive of travel into the present and future.

Centered above the building and flowing from Morgan’s head wear are the three doves of the St. Vincent logo depicting the three aspects of holistic healing -- body, mind, and spirit. The doves guide the viewer across the mural much the same as the horse and buggy doctor. Their integrated formation is not unlike the other connected elements within the design. As a whole, the mural works to recognize the past, acknowledge human contribution, and by placing it in the new wing, commit to the future.

4th Quarter Bar, Terre Haute, Indiana

A TRIP THROUGH TIME
Upon consulting with the client, owner of the 4th Quarter Bar, it was concluded that he wanted a historical theme on the exterior wall of his bar. I kept with a bar theme but took the design from the 1920s to current day from left to right. The biggest challenge of this mural was the surface of the aging brick. I met the challenge with a power washing and primer basecoat. Upon completion, a protective sealer was applied, which is the case with all of my murals. This mural was executed in 2003 and is holding up well, even on the old brick. Unfortunately, vandals threw pink paint on a large section of the mural, but, thanks to the protective coating, it cleaned off nicely.
